Hi, friends! Long time no talk! I have many things to update you on and ton’s to talk about (like the birth of our baby) but in sharing about our summer yard projects on Instagram, I have received lots of interest in this topic specifically. Since it’s already July, I figured i’d start with this so that you can get some things’s done in your yard before Fall get’s here!
Fall is my favorite season to sit outside! We spend the most time in our yard, in the Fall. I am looking forward to this year’s Fall season more than I ever have, now that we have comfortable seating out back! We have also figured out how to get a TV outside to watch Football. Praying we have a Football season to watch but that’s another story! Last year, our deck was bare! We had a hard time finding affordable outdoor seating and decor so we ended up with lots of DIY projects and re-purposed items (that I LOVE). I plan to share each DIY Project with you, individually on the blog. If I tried to do it all in this post, it would be overwhelming (for you and me both). SO I have decided I will start with a list, my top 5 tips for getting your outdoor space ready for Fall, for entertaining and for relaxing during the upcoming season!
Build a deck! Our deck has been a game changer. We plan to utilize it for years to come! It is truly the epicenter of our family fun. To eat, to sit and chat, to take pictures… every time we have family over, we end up on the deck! My dogs love it as well. I am sure it feels much cooler on their bellies in this summer heat than the concrete they laid on last year. Grass is beneath them, apparently! Haha! Spoiled things! Because of the heavy traffic and frequent use on ours, from experience, I highly recommend that you use high quality wood to build yours! Brazilian Wood Depot, located in Atlanta, offers Purpleheart Decking. Purpleheart Decking is all natural, extremely hard, extremely durable, insect resistant and fire resistant, just to name a few of it’s features! Click the links above to learn more about both Brazilian Wood Depot and Purpleheart Decking!
Add a fire pit (area)! We cleared out an area in our yard for a large fire pit. We used railroad ties to section off a square, laid down landscaping fabric to prevent weed growth in the fire pit, filled it with light gray landscaping rocks, placed a small black fire pit in the center and then topped off the area with some white Adirondack chairs. This area has become one of my favorite places to sit and relax. I will make sure to share a separate post on this soon so that you can have all the details when creating yours! Unfortunately, it’s POURING rain here today so I can’t hop outside to take a picture and the only picture I have on my phone of our fire pit is from the week we installed it. Our grass had not grown in and we had not hung string lights yet so the photo is a little “first draft” but at least you can see what we started with!
Plant things! In the ground, in planters, on your herb wall (see my Instagram for details on our herb wall). We planted tons of shrubbery around our deck. We are also watching our first ever peach tree sprout peaches this year! I have 17 assorted pots on our deck (crazy plant lady, much)? Some of my favorite porch plants are Ferns, Hostas, Citronella (to keep the mosquitoes away) and Petunias. I am a green and white kind of gal but feel free to add color to your area!!
Hang string lights! Affordable, super simple to hang, HUGE impact. We used to keep our back door light on when entertaining out back, at night. BUGS. It attracted so many bugs! We added two strands of string lights on the porch and over by the fire pit to use instead and the bug problem was gone! Plus they let off a much more relaxing glow.
Add seating! As I stated above, we had a hard time finding affordable outdoor seating (and affordable outdoor cushions) so we made our own! I think i’ll combine the fire pit post with our furniture building plans post. That will be coming soon! Nonetheless, SEATING. It’s so important! Make your space comfortable for guests to sit and stay awhile! I tend to be a little more picky with aesthetic and want all of our seating to be the same, or at least go well together, rather than throwing a bunch of multicolored camping chairs around but that’s just me. If you are not DIY savvy but are in the same “expensive taste, lower budget” boat that I am in, I recommend you get plastic Adirondack chairs. They are comfortable, affordable and super easy to clean. Ours are white but you can find them in MANY colors!
If you know me, you know that I could go on and on about our outdoor living space and technically, with all of the “back yard” related post’s I have coming up, I AM going on and on but at least I am spacing it out, right? If you have ANY questions / want to know how to do some of the DIY projects I have teased on Instagram, immediately, reach out! Happy to share ASAP! I can’t wait to see how you transform your outdoor living space! Send me pictures!
